Cape York Regional Plan (under review)
The Queensland Government is committed to developing renewed regional plans with supporting infrastructure plans that cover every corner of the state.
Renewed regional plans will be contemporary, fit-for-purpose integrated land use and infrastructure plans, focused on supporting housing delivery and jobs where they are needed.
Each Queensland community and region has unique strengths, opportunities, identities and lifestyles, and every part of Queensland contributes to our state’s success in its own way.
The Cape York region includes the local government areas of:
- Northern Peninsula Regional Council
- Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council
- Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council
- Weipa Town Authority
- Aurukun Shire Council
- Lockart River Aboriginal Shire Council
- Cook Shire Council
- Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council
- Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council
- Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council
(Consideration being given to inclusion of Torres Strait Island Regional Council and Torres Shire Council).
Review purpose
The Cape York Regional Plan is currently undergoing a review with an emphasis on housing supply and economic growth.
Informed by local government, the review is looking at the current provisions, streamlining policy, mapping, implementation, and will provide clearer guidance for plan-making and development assessment.
The Cape York Infrastructure Plan will be included as an appendix to the regional plan and is being developed alongside the streamlined review.
Public consultation on the draft Cape York Regional Plan (including infrastructure plan) will occur during the statutory notification period, which is planned for this year.
Approach
The revised approach is for the Cape York Regional Plan to be streamlined and more targeted, focusing on critical areas such as land use, housing supply, and economic development.
This approach includes feedback gathered from local governments and state agencies to provide a clearer, more actionable framework for the region.
Infrastructure addition
A draft Cape York Infrastructure Plan is being developed alongside the Cape York Regional Plan review.
Infrastructure planning for Cape York is currently supported by the Far North Queensland Infrastructure Plan 2024 (
9.6 MB).
This plan will be replaced when the new Cape York Regional Plan and Infrastructure Plan is finalised and takes effect.
The draft infrastructure plan will include infrastructure policy outcomes and future planning considerations to guide how infrastructure supports long-term regional growth.
